Safe Routes To School (SRTS) program integrates health, fitness, traffic relief, environmental awareness, and safety in one program.
Safe Routes To School, in conjunction with neighborhood schools, works to accomplish this in a variety of ways including:
- Fun events that encourage students to try walking and biking, like planning a safe walk/bike route to school
- Education that teaches students and the public important safety skills, like safety courses, bike rodeos, and driver safety campaigns
- Creation of physical improvements to the infrastructure surround the school, reducing speeds and establishing safer crosswalks and pathways. This would include working with city engineers, school board, city government, and others to create safe school bus unloading zones, a separate student drop off lane for parents, safe sidewalks, and lights.
- Traffic law enforcement to help ensure compliance with established safety measures, such as the strategic placement of crossing guards.
